FAQs
Q. Do I need to have any experience?
A: Not at all - contra is a relatively casual dance style and the focus is on participating and having fun, not footwork or technique. It’s very helpful to come to the 30-minute orientation before the dance which will set you up with the fundamentals, so you’ll have everything you need to enjoy the evening. We think that you can have a good time dancing the first time you come, and by the third time you’ll be starting to really get it. (Incidentally, your third time is free!)
Q: Do you need to bring a partner?
A: Nope! While Contra is danced with partners, bringing a partner is not necessary, and most people come on their own.
A: Do you use gender-free role terms?
A: Yes, and we encourage everyone to dance the role(s) that they’d like.
Q: What kind of shoes should I wear?
A: You should wear comfortable shoes with a soft and smooth, non-grippy sole. For a first-time dancer, a canvas sneaker (like Converse or Toms), broken-in dress shoes, or boots without treads will work fine. We recommend that you don’t wear heels. Experienced dancers often purchase dance shoes with leather bottoms, but they aren’t necessary.
Q. What kind of clothes should I wear?
A: Anything loose fitting, comfortable, and perhaps a little stylish. Contra dancing is a physical activity, so you’ll want to be able to move easily. Lots of people dance in jeans, shorts, skirts and casual dresses.
Q: How can I volunteer?
A: We currently have volunteer spots open for day-of dance setup and checkin table shifts - you can learn more by emailing volunteer@brooklyncontra.org
