Cojiro is Jess Newman and Mark Price, a duo of folk musicians creating modern folk music with a special focus on contra dance: Stompy, exciting, fun and funky.
Jess and Mark have been playing music together for over 10 years, but lived across the country from one another for most of that time. Mark (guitar, cello and mandolin,) has played music most of their life in many genres, including jazz and funk, both of which heavily influence Cojiro. Jess (fiddle) has played in several contra dance bands around the California bay area, including Pepperjack and Back Pocket. Recently, Cojiro has been occasionally joined by Benjamin Graubart on driving fiddle and mandolin! Check out their recently released single at https://fanlink.to/cojiro-alleyoop.
Julian Blechner is a seasoned contra and set dance caller based in Western Massachusetts. He has been calling dances since 2011, from festivals like the New England Folk Festival and Flurry to series dances of all sizes from Maine to the Middle Atlantic. Julian enjoys calling for all skill levels of dancers, and specializes in creating fun evenings with varied and engaging choreography for whatever the crowd is up for! He brings a cheerful, friendly attitude with clear, concise teaching and prompting.
