Contra is the perfect social dance to get new dancers started, and the 30-minute intro is all you need to enjoy the next three hours of dancing. It's the perfect way to socialize during dry January, with dances hosted at a local non-profit event venue and a social to follow!

Contra is an easy-to-learn folk dance (similar to square dancing with some swing dance flair) that comes with a free lesson and amazing live tunes! Originating in northern Appalachia based on English and French formal dances, contra is now danced around the country by multi-generational communities. All dances at Brooklyn Contra are taught and called using gender-free terminology. Bringing a partner isn't necessary as folks switch partners between each dance.
