About The Catholic Workers in NYC:
The Catholic Workers (CW) are a 90-year-old movement founded to advance Catholic social teachings (read: Catholic Anarchists, but not actually officially affiliated with the Catholic Church). Today they run more than 70 houses of hospitality across the country, including two in New York City. The NYC CW owns their houses (Mary and Joseph), which serve as a base for their combination of good works and activism, such as a soup kitchen (and Food Not Bombs), providing housing to local folks in need, lots of protest organizing, and providing space for leftist Christian organizations to host events. Mary House, at 55 E. 3rd St., was formerly the 3rd Street Music Settlement School in the heart of the Lower East Side, and has a beautiful concert hall able to hold 150 people.
